About Alton

Alton, a charming village nestled in the heart of Ontario, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. However, it was during the period between the 1850s and 1900s that the majority of its growth occurred, thanks to the bustling milling operations on Shaw’s Creek, a tributary of the Credit River. These mills played a vital role in powering various industries, paving the way for Alton’s prosperity and the eventual adoption of its current name.

What sets Alton apart is its preservation of its storied past, which lends the town an enchanting old-world charm. Despite this nostalgic appeal, residents enjoy the convenience of being within close proximity to the amenities of Orangeville and a reasonable commuting distance from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The historic downtown area boasts heritage homes and is home to the highly regarded Alton Public School.

While the mills that once drove the local economy have ceased their operations, they have been repurposed into prominent landmarks of the town. The Alton Mills Art Centre and the Mill Croft Inn & Spa now stand as testament to Alton’s transformation over the years. The town’s housing options are diverse, ranging from Victorian homes to ranch-style bungalows, cottage-style residences, and even newer constructions.

It is important to note that as of 2022, Alton does not have municipal services, which means properties rely on well and septic systems. Despite this, Alton remains a captivating village with picturesque waterfalls, the scenic Grand Valley Trail System, delightful local shops, and an overall ambiance that entices many to call it home.
